Trophic ecology influence on metal bioaccumulation in marine fish: Inference from stable isotope and fatty acid analyses ArchiMer
Le Croizier, Gael; Schaal, Gauthier; Gallon, Regis; Fall, Massal; Le Grand, Fabienne; Munaron, Jean-marie; Rouget, Marie-laure; Machu, Eric; Le Loc'H, Francois; Lae, Raymond; De Morais, Luis Tito.
The link between trophic ecology and metal accumulation in marine fish species was investigated through a multi-tracers approach combining fatty acid (FA) and stable isotope (SI) analyses on fish from two contrasted sites on the coast of Senegal, one subjected to anthropogenic metal effluents and another one less impacted. The concentrations of thirteen trace metal elements (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sn, U, and Zn) were measured in fish liver. Individuals from each site were classified into three distinct groups according to their liver FA and muscle SI compositions. Trace element concentrations were tested between groups revealing that bioaccumulation of several metals was clearly dependent on the trophic guild of fish. Furthermore,...

Use of lytic bacteriophages to reduce Salmonella Enteritidis in experimentally contaminated chicken cuts Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Fiorentin,L; Vieira,ND; Barioni Júnior,W.
Reducing Salmonella contamination in poultry is of major importance to prevent the introduction of this microorganism into the food chain. Salmonellae may spread during storage time (shelf life) whenever pre-harvest control fails or post-harvest contamination occurs. Therefore, preventive measures should also be used in the post-harvest level of poultry production in order to control salmonellae. Chicken skin samples were experimentally contaminated by immersing whole legs (thighs and drumsticks) in a suspension containing 10(6) colony forming units per milliliter (CFU/mL) of Salmonella Enteritidis phage type 4 (SE PT4) at the slaughter day. One day later, samples from one group were immersed in a suspension pool containing 10(9) CFU/mL of each of three...

Use of rotavirus virus-like particles as surrogates to evaluate virus persistence in shellfish ArchiMer
Loisy, Fabienne; Atmar, R; Le Saux, Jean-claude; Cohen, J; Caprais, Marie-paule; Pommepuy, Monique; Le Guyader, Soizick.
Rotavirus virus-like particles (VLPs) and MS2 bacteriophages were bioaccumulated in bivalve mollusks to evaluate viral persistence in shellfish during depuration and relaying under natural conditions. Using this nonpathogenic surrogate virus, we were able to demonstrate that about 1 log(10) of VLPs was depurated after 1 week in warm seawater (22 degrees C). Phage MS2 was depurated more rapidly (about 2 log(10) in 1 week) than were VLPs, as determined using a single-compartment model and linear regression analysis. After being relayed in the estuary under the influence of the tides, VLPs were detected in oysters for up to 82 days following seeding with high levels of VLPs (concentration range between 10(10) and 10(9) particles per g of pancreatic tissue)...

ชุดตรวจสอบการปลอมปนข้าวหอมมะลิ Thai Agricultural
Janya Saengkiew; Kongsak Srikaew.
Amylose is one of the indicators to examine the purity of Hom Mali Rice. This research developed the test kit for determination of contaminated Hom Mali Rice. The test kit is based on the blue iodine’s color which is changed in according to amylose content. It was found that the suitable test kit composed of the steps for sample preparation which included preparing milled-white rice before they were subject to lipid removal by washing with ether. Iodine solution was used to develop the color for the prepared samples. The colors of the samples were compared with the established color bands and the levels of contaminations could be judged. The test kit has been evaluated and it was found to be effective.
